SixthSense
Gear |  Concept
SixthSense‘ is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information. You can take pictures using your fingers, see, zoom the map or check your mail by your fingers, see ‘watch’ on your wrist and even the newspaper can show live video news or dynamic information…(watch the video!)
“The SixthSense prototype is comprised of a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera. The hardware components are coupled in a pendant like mobile wearable device. Both the projector and the camera are connected to the mobile computing device in the user’s pocket. The projector projects visual information enabling surfaces, walls and physical objects around us to be used as interfaces”

Cellphone + Japan Media

Avex Broadcasting & Communications Inc, a new company founded by Avex Entertainment and NTT Docomo, announced Wednesday that it will produce and broadcast dramas, variety shows, music shows and animation exclusively for cell phones through its new service BeeTV. beetv_a.jpg Twenty-one programs, all of which run for less than 10 minutes, have already been given the green light. BeeTV starts airing its programs on May 1 for a monthly charge of 315 yen ($3).

___________

one of the many reasons why apple iphone was not successful in the beginning within japan….they did not realize the amount of users that watch tv on their cell phone! heck i would if i took a train to work. In the american style…we have tv in our cars… so we are just as bad.

YAHOO japan is heading tv style

“According to Yahoo Japan’s survey, about 10 million units of networked TVs have sold thus far in Japan with more six million expected to sell in one year. Assuming 20% of the networked-TV users will access the Internet, Yahoo Japan considers that its service could be used through more than three million TVs by the end of March 2010.

The company started the full-scale service for TVs at this timing in view of the possibility that consumer trends in Internet usage will drastically change in a few years from now. Inoue pointed out that there is a large gap between general users’ average times of using the Internet and TVs, about 13 and 119 hours a month, respectively. Yahoo Japan can sharply increase the time of using the Internet by adding flat-panel TVs to the media for its service, he said.

The initial seven services are all simple. However, Yahoo Japan is planning to add its mainstay services such as online shopping, auction and video delivery in the future. In addition to the introduction of the “Yahoo! ID” membership, which has 22 million users, and the “Yahoo! Wallet” payment service being used by more than 18 million users, the company will explore services that work in conjunction with TV programs”

So has googlezon move over into Yahoo domain for japan? with the yahoo ID and wallet? we shall see?

Discovered Clip Marks

Just testing it’s ability and i must say, convenient! so far….
okay so… the next step for clipmarks is more control. yeah… i am picky but also i am not. Our society has grown picky…last century it was about speed – faster and faster – internet, email, instant messaging, cellphone – now i notice the pattern is control…. the way we blog – the level of control to change colors, stylize, and make it the way the user wants it. Even on the scale of cellphones, we want control of our cellphone and access everywhere on the grid. If a wifi connection is down, we get upset because we lost control of the wifi.
For clipmarks i want control of the edge widget borders and to make the video file bigger, which i have already done, by going through the code and changing the numbers. But do i want to do this for every clipmark i post. but, i think i can deal with this because control is complete outweighed by convenience!
clipped from clipmarks.com
You can save clips publicly for others to see, post them to Facebook, or embed a widget of them on your own site. You can also save clips privately for your own viewing later. Your clip collection is searchable from any computer with an internet connection (including your iPhone, Blackberry, etc).

Missing the EPIC 2015

Earlier i posted the “Did you know?” video and honestly i felt bad not posting the EPIC 2015, cause back in the day of 2004 when style – technology – internet was just starting to mix together, All of us college geeks were like “hey have you heard of googlezon?”

I personally felt this video was a turning point in my decision for what type of designer i wish to become – cause at risd i did everything full speed and then went “okay? that was not challenging enough…” And post risd i jump into medical products – talk about complications….rules, ISO, FDA, human factors, etc, I am like —”okay, cool now that is what i am talking about”

enjoy.

Blade Runner-Minority Report ADS have arrived

The picture above shows the screens can be curved and holed and still working. Also using electricity the screen can be transparent or solid. cool.

Okay, what? we can have moving action pack posters now? It is possible, so what is the price tag? Now the next question…when is the right time for this in America’s market…cause well all of us who are raised on blade runner will want this, but the generations raised before might not, but then how about the star wars generation? Any takers- why the movie “generations” well think about – the kindle and the iphone is doing well because that reflects the people raised on star trek! and star trek generation is the first sci-fi children (the late baby boomers).

from article:

LinkEarth Corp developed a window-attachable digital signage film, “ViVid Screen,” equipped with an LCD screen that changes its color from opaque white to transparent when electricity is applied.

The film can be used as store signage by displaying images projected from behind. So far, there have only been products that are installed integrally with a window. But the ViVid Screen can be attached to existing windows to display movies. This was enabled by the adoption of the Gecko Pocket, a sheet that can be repeatedly attached and removed and is manufactured by VKF Renzel GmbH of Germany.

The new window-attachable LCD screen comes in postcard size, A4 size and 40 inches. Although there is no manufacturer’s suggested retail price, the price of the 40-inch model is expected to be about ¥150,000 (approx US$1,508). At present, LinkEarth produces LCD screens with a size up to 80 inches and can make a 80-inch window-attachable LCD screen if asked by a customer.

Images projected by a projector cannot be clearly seen in direct sunlight. Therefore, users can, for example, turn on the screen to make it transparent so that passers-by can see the items in the shop window. And, during the hours when the sun isn’t as bright, they can turn off the screen to make it opaque white so that images can be projected onto it by a projector.

shift happens – did you know update

two years ago (maybe a bit more – time moves fast) the first original “did you know” was presented at the NorthEast IDSA conference held at RISD. But now this is updated for 2008. and it needs updating again cause i feel the shift in internet searching-networking (I am sure this economy is doing it)– cause never before has a community internet network like twitter has sky rocket in such speed. with young college graduates without jobs and the middle age losing jobs there is this mix of time – relearning – reflecting – reinventing – believe me, half of my friends on facebook are pushing the social network to the limits and it is kinda cool too.

Samsung and LG are battling out in china!

this reminds me of our battle between blue-ray disc and HD disc….now who will win in china? samsung’s VA (vertically-aligned) display technology or LG’s IPS (in-plane switching) display technology.
