01Jul09This is one of the best presentation by a start up design consultant i have seen. Literally they are just starting… you can see their website saying that. link is below. I love their design business model which case a consult that uses students to give “ideo, smart, frog, and continuum” mind set. but think for a moment. those companies can only hire X amount of people and there are tons of people out there that can do what they do. THIS IS AWESOME!

Service Design out look
29Jun09Service design, while often talked about in academia, is getting more and more attention from design companies and service providers, as the impact of experience design has been proven to increase customer satisfaction and brand perception. This isn’t to say that service design is only about the customer’s experience; while that’s a big part of it, service designers also look at the delivery of the service, its operational efficiency, and its scalability from a design point of view. They focus on designing both the overall service, an intangible exchange like using a bank account or renting a car, and each of the touch points within the service, which may be tangible products like a bank statement, website or or rental car. Service designers map the way that a service is experienced over time and each of the interactions within the experience.
list of priorities towards good service design:
IMMEDIACY
CO-CREATION
VOICE
EXPERTISE
CUSTOMIZATION
This is a good article that helps me to understand in detail about service design. heck i never got a degree in “service design” but for many people how can you say that you got a degree into that field. This field comes with experience when working in multiple backgrounds…

Bouroullec design philo
02Jun09They have very nice work, my favorite is the colorful piece in the first picture. well it is geometric (triangle is my natural default design shape) – it is weird but we – designers – have a shape we gravitate to, whether is it a circle, square, an S curve… who knows but only you know or a good observer points that out about your work.
but anyway i love that they don’t have a formula to design and it should be like that because not all problems are the same. each problem is different and must be look at to how to solve it effectively, so if you do formulas you get dull “okay” answers… it is just not satisfying. but look at the article and also they were in objectified which is truly funny how they talk to each other.
How’s your creative process?
There is no set formula. Each project suggests a different approach. Yet, it is true that from the outside, it seems that the process is marked by some essential steps. First, there is thinking and dialog. Then or simultaneously comes the extensive step of drawing. After that or together with it come the steps of the modelling and 3D drawing… that dialog with manual drawing. Last, comes the prototype step … and the process gets back to the beginning: thinking, drawing etc. Until we get satisfied by the project…. [read more]
Design research video

Resonance from Continuum on Vimeo.
this is one of those videos of raising the bar.
the editing – the story line and the way to they use design research to marketed as an entertaining video, but seriously when you watch the actual interview it is visually boring…. the story is important and they did a gooda job of that.
What is emotional design?
09Apr09John Barratt, CEO of Teague – LINK
Because I believe in collaboration, I asked three firms I particularly admire to join me, they were One and Co (Jonah Becker), Philips Design (Scott Lehman) and Frog design (Mark Rolston). These three gentlemen are super talented and generous. Together we outlined the major trends that we collectively believe have significantly influenced the industry over the past few years, I’d like to share them with you now:
- “It’s not about the object, stupid!?
I guess its obvious from the title, but we believe today’s powerful creative’s realize that the object is just a prop – yes you have to design it faultlessly – but it’s just part of a broader story we need to be crafting.. - Globalization
What an opportunity, lets all embrace this one. Learn to understand different cultures, their idiosyncrasies, their ideologies, and then translate them into relevant products. It’s also about learning to team globally – a thrilling opportunity. - Individuality
If you go into a design Studio and hear words like ‘cool’ used to describe the work, run as fast as you can! The language of today’s design Studios need to be about “relevance?, “culture? “empathy?… today’s marketplace is fragmented, hard to define, and driven by the cult of the individual. It’s a fascinating place, and it requires a new level of human understanding.
- There’s no such thing as ideal conditions
This one is particularly close to me heart. Timelines are short. Expectations are long. Budgets are tight… there’s no such thing as ideal conditions. The key is in taking what you have and still making it shine. Making it look easy. A task that requires unconditional commitment.
he is interviewed about the importance of design and how the company Teague has stayed true to themselves about the importance of designing emotionally. –
Walter Dorwin Teague was a true pioneer; he understood the importance of emotion and believed our ultimate goal was to create a pleasurable experience for the users of the objects we design. Seems simple enough, though over the years I believe the industry has somewhat lost sight of that. Design today has become a bit of a business press darling, in some respects that exposure has raised the bar, but I don’t know that the design industry has properly capitalized on that. I’d like to see more examples of design leading business; educating, mentoring and demonstrating the massive economic potential of emotionally relevant products.
Essential–New Website
01Mar09Okay I just want to eat it! that is how tasty the interface-navigation design of their new website. Click on the link to get to see their website. It is very simple, not over the top but very different across the broad of other design firm website offerings. The website design came from Tank Design – of course, they are AWESOME! and they are located in cambridge too. If only i was a graphics designer i would love to work with them.
