A new book to show, but this is from back in 1976. I discover this back in the RISD days when i sit skimming through the books for countless hours… after long distance from the book i found it used and must claim it. There is a slide of crime and death in the slide that made me laugh how the icons depicts such actions. enjoy.

Will Kindle be in the dust?
17Feb09I just mention about the new kindle that amazon is sending out, but this thinly device just made my day. The concern i see with the electronic paper is how cheap can it go to consider it valuable for everyone to use to stop using paper? and of course how “concrete” of physical can the information be like the future of books. In many ways it can be like the blogsphere, think about, with the ablity to “download” the book on the device… everyone can be writers. and I don’t think people (above 40) realize the effects it will be. Take american otakus for an example (crazy anime obsessive americans) they are making fan-stories on their blog or website or whatever. with the access of paper devices that market of fan-stories will explode for other otakus to read such imagintive stores based on an anime. Just warning you, there are a lot that absolutely suck but otakus will read it anyway. That is just one group. you got the trekkie fans, comic bookies, etc etc.
Kindle 2.0

So, are we all excite for the NEXT kindle?

I am not surprise that Amazon quickly redid the kindle, wasn’t it just a couple years ago. My first opinion of the first one was the form language was asking for trouble. What were they thinking with the device. The new version is better, but nothing new. to me it is going closer to the iphone look and feel. Do we need devices all over the world to start looking like Apple? I like apple products but as a student of human nature+culture, we will not function if everything becomes the same. individuality is still needed.
A friend mention me a point, about the terrible creativity of most designers out there.
We are copycats in our own ways, we see something and copy it. Admit it, you say you get inspired from nature, again down to the digits of 000′s 111′s you copy what nature is showing you. so what we see here is so liking to star trek (the original+next generation).
but i am still waiting for mine in black….

Book on japanese packaging
11Feb09just to let you all know, i have been thinking about creating slides of great books i either own or love, so that other people can see and probably convince themselves that they need to have it.
This is a full collection of japanese packaging, mostly in the food and comestic arena but there are some packaging in electronics but not many. I hope you all enjoy the slides.
for the love of books

Personally talented designers never make great managers. The theory is that the more messy and disorganized your life is the more creative as a designer you are. In some parts of it is true, I have gotten a bit sloppy, which is becoming evident in my brainstorming. Unlike other people I control by sloppiness to designated areas of my life.
But a short cut for young designers to how to manage design please read the book, of course with those with experience this might be reoccurring reflections of your past. I was fortunate to have family lecturing me how one goes about managing and motivating people underneath you. They never did art or design, but it is soooooo true what they tell me when i see it happening at work. LINK
More than a Name i feel is one of the best brand marketing graphic design books out there. It is full of short stories and ideas about what a brand should mean and how it should help the company. I feel it is a pick up and read here and there book cause from start to finish you can forget what you just learn from the beginning too. LINK
It is rare to find a nice collection of diagrams for inspiration and references. It is a must have book and inspiring to look what other graphic designers and architectural designers are doing currently to explain complex information. LINK
Mental Models
14Sep08so i have been reading this book. and it is very tactful about outlining your research which it is on a very tight budget or big one. and usually in reality clients don’t like to have a big budget for user research for product design.
For designers it can be a drag, cause there is not a lot of visuals, but if you wish to understand that world of design research such as screening users for interviews and doing interviews (but i think there are better books on this topic area) to laying out a pattern for identifying user needs and insights.
Economic Naturalist

I don’t read books of design, they sing the same tune that I already learn from school and practice. But I do read books outside of my field to get a larger picture about everything co-existing in the society.
I love economics, if I could not draw or build, i would have become an economist because i can see business opportunities and I love the “science” of business flow and money. I did very well in economics in high school but lost touch at RISD (can’t do everything). But if you can’t do the math and graphics of typical economics than read this book. I suggest every designer should read it, it is enjoyable and fun to read.
But more importantly it is down to earth with ideas of why soda cans are round and milk cartons are square? Why taxi cabs are yellow sedan in NYC but in Ithaca are multi-car minivans? why the portraits on coins done in profile while those on paper money are in full face? Why are DVDs sold in much larger packages than CDs? etc.
