RISD to honor creative knight at graduation | Rhode Island news | projo.com | The Providence Journal.

Sir Ken Robinson, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 for his achievements as a writer and arts advocate, is considered one of the world’s leading thinkers on creativity. His concepts about adapting creativity to the ever-shifting global economy have been embraced by education, government and business leaders, as well as by the arts world. From 1989 to 2001, Robinson taught at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. He now lives in Los Angeles.

Robinson will receive an honorary doctor of fine arts degree, along with four other “exceptional individuals who have made groundbreaking contributions to the world of art and design,”

•Caterina Fake, founder of Flickr, an online photo-sharing Web site, made Time magazine’s list of the world’s most 100 influential people. Fake, 40, now works as chief product officer at Hunch, a customized decision-making Web site that “gets smarter the more you use it.”

•Jonathan Ive is the senior vice president of industrial design at Apple and leads the team behind the iMac, iPod and iPhone. In 2003, he was named designer of the year by the Design Museum London and was awarded the title Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts.

2G verse 3G iphones… it’s what inside that matters

The rational design of the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2G are similar in appearance, but they are different in internal parts layout. The iPhone 2G had main parts mounted on both sides of a frame in the center of the chassis, while the iPhone 3G has the parts piled on the back cover of the chassis. In addition, the back cover of the iPhone 3G chassis is made of resin, allowing a more flexible layout of the antennas and making it possible to include a main antenna for W-CDMA and GSM and a sub-antenna for wireless LAN, Bluetooth and GPS at different locations. In the iPhone 2G, which had a metallic back cover, antennas were concentrated on the bottom of the chassis. In respect to the Li-polymer secondary batteries, both of the models are equipped with battery cells simply wrapped in a laminated film. Though there was no description about the battery capacities, but the volumes of the two batteries are almost the same. (Click to enlarge)

Apple’s design process – BusinessWeek

Apple’s design process – BusinessWeek.

Interesting presentation at SXSW from Michael Lopp, senior engineering manager at Apple, who tried to assess how Apple can ‘get’ design when so many other companies try and fail. After describing Apple’s process of delivering consumers with a succession of presents (“really good ideas wrapped up in other really good ideas” — in other words, great software in fabulous hardware in beautiful packaging), he asked the question many have asked in their time: “How the f*ck do you do that?” (South by Southwest is at ease with its panelists speaking earthily.) Then he went into a few details:

Pixel Perfect Mockups
This, Lopp admitted, causes a huge amount of work and takes an enormous amount of time. But, he added, “it removes all ambiguity.” That might add time up front, but it removes the need to correct mistakes later on.

10 to 3 to 1
Apple designers come up with 10 entirely different mock ups of any new feature. Not, Lopp said, “seven in order to make three look good”, which seems to be a fairly standard practice elsewhere. They’ll take ten, and give themselves room to design without restriction. Later they whittle that number to three, spend more months on those three and then finally end up with one strong decision.

wish there is more “wor-INK-ing” modeling going around in all companies it makes my job easier and more creative…

MACBOOK icon is videoing…

I have a feeling we will have multiple screens big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones, tall ones, short ones, square ones, round ones…. all on one device! woah!

just think how you mind sensory will overload…. I personally think we do this to technology because our brains are bored…. the more coolness comes out the more our brain chemicals trigger addictions….

check it – someone got the apple icon to play video… see his site for more info.

Objectified

new documentary is coming out about design being not just beautiful looking but intuitive to operate without a manual.

from an article…

“…This industrial design documentary will be most anticipated by those who have seen the director’s previous documentary, Helvetica—a compelling film the explores the history and impact of the font. Objectified features interviews with an all-star cast of some of the world’s most influential living industrial designers, including iPod designer Jonathan Ive, controversial BMW designer Chris Bangle and former Braun design chief Dieter Rams…”

it was in this years Sundance Film Festival.

if you have not seen helvetica, than i think youshould whether you like fonts or even care for fonts, cause the documentary is a good example of photography and storyline. I think it is a bit revolutionary in terms of documentary style.  The documentary “The Great Happiness Place”  also has the similar feeling of cinematography, of course a NYC filmmaker did the documentary. The pic contains a link to an article to explain more about the doctumentary.
