Hulu and YouTube are going after each other’s turf. The two online giants are in competition for the video programming that could generate the most advertising dollars.

YouTube will be adding a new tab titled ‘Shows’ that allows users to to watch, comment on, favorite, and share full-length television episodes and movies from a number of studios that Hulu already carries. YouTube inserts Google TV ads online where commercial breaks usually occur, or before or after the video plays.

Hulu is working on a deal with ABC that will give Hulu rights to ABC’s programing. That would be a sweet deal since ABC has to date restricted their content to their own website.

It remains to be seen if all this digging for dollars will alienate YouTube’s amateur production community or thwart Hulu’s model of online TV and movies.

Time for a Hulu-YouTube GoogleFight.
YouTube on Thursday took aim at its biggest competitor, Hulu, announcing it would begin offering movies, TV shows and content from studios such as Crackle/Sony Pictures, CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz, the BBC, Anime Network, Cinetic Rights Management, Current TV, Discovery, Documentary Channel, First Look Studios, IndieFlix, National Geographic and more. YouTube dominates online video viewing, but Hulu, while seeing far less visitors, is doing much better at monetizing its content… (hothardware)

Twist of a tattoo

clipped from www.trendhunter.com
statement from article… Those of us with tattoos know how very personal they are, and say a lot about the moment in time when we had them inked. That background makes this collection of monstrous tattoos all the more puzzling. They are creep, macabre, dark, and slightly twisted….

to me a non tattoo person…i think it is their rights to do whatever they wish to place on their body. But do I call it creepie? dark? NO! institutional yeah, but that image is very inventive…consider how you it would look if you xray a pregnant woman….that cool!

ZUNE-OLUTION

Zune HD

The Zune HD will feature a multitouch OLED screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and an HDMI TV output port. The Zune HD will be available in a 16 and 32 GB version. Both versions will have wireless support that will allow you to sync the device with a computer. There’s also some speculation that the Zune HD may use the Nvidia’s Tegra chipset that would support 3D games.

There will also be a Web browser incorporated into the player but no word yet as to what browser will be used. There’s also speculation that the Zune HD may be running on Windows Mobile 6.5 which is expected to be released Q4, same as the player.

Sources have confirmed that the Zune HD is Microsoft’s next version of portable media players. There’s a Zune HD website, but it is not owned by Microsoft and is not operational yet. We can probably expect that an internal video of the Zune HD, which some sites have been talking about, will be leaking sometime soon. This will gives us a better idea of its dimensions and screen menus.

The Zune HD is expected to be available the fourth quarter of this year, most likely in September. Microsoft also plans to make improvements to the Zune Marketplace and expand its Zune platform beyond just the US and Canada.

NANO-CAMO is happening!

Sandia researcher George Bachand examines an enlargement of actual images of light-emitting quantum dots. These ride microtubules that have spontaneously formed stable circles of about 5 microns diameter. The picture superimposes two separate images – one of green rings and one of red – for visual effect. The images were processed to remove noise and maximize contrast. (Photo by Randy Montoya)

“Camouflage outfits that blend with a variety of environments without need of an outside power source — say, blue when at sea and then brown in a desert environment — is where this work could eventually lead,” says principal investigator George Bachand. “Or the same effect could be used in fabricating chic civilian clothing that automatically changes color to fit different visual settings.”

Such clothing could be a reality in five to ten years, he says.

The power source for both the biological and the lab method relies on the basic cellular fuel called ATP, which releases energy as it breaks down. Fifty percent (roughly) is absorbed by the motor proteins — tiny molecular motors able to move along surfaces…

$20 artificial knee for patients

Kamal used a prosthetic knee joint, developed by Stanford’s JaipurKnee Project team, during prototype testing last August. The knee joint was on display April 8 at the university’s annual Cool Product Expo.

(PhysOrg.com) — Last year Joel Sadler and his classmates faced a daunting challenge in their Biomedical Device Design and Evaluation course: Create a low-cost, high-performance prosthetic knee joint for amputees in the developing world. Dubbed the JaipurKnee Project, the team aimed to help rectify lives ravaged by war and diseases such as diabetes.

Bias + Innovation

…Once managers lock in on a certain picture, they will often reshape reality to fit into that familiar frame. (See “Missed Signals in Pearl Harbor.”) Humans tend to judge too quickly when presented with ambiguous data; we have to work extra hard to consider less familiar scenarios.

Whenever multiple pieces of evidence point in opposite directions, or when crucial information is missing, our minds naturally shape the facts to fit our preconceptions…

…In principle, groups should be better than individuals at detecting changes and responding to them. But often a group can fall victim to narrow-minded analysis, tunnel vision, a false sense of consensus and poor information gathering, resulting in groupthink. The true relevance of various snippets of information often can be fully appreciated only when they are debated with others and merged into a larger mosaic…

Currently I have been reading “how we decide” and it is a good book to help a reader to start visualizing the idea of connecting the dots of social human information which we are experiencing within our society and economy. This article applies to my belief to present all bias and stereotypes “on the table” before the project starts… when creating strategies for the next field of product evolutions.

just off subject … One  theory I think from time to time is to reevaluate  our bias  of  “sharing.” The capitalistic world views internet sharing as illegal downloading. But no one is actually making a profit for copying media and posting it on filehost site. the profit they would actually get are from the ad banners on their website.

Think about emoticons… the creator came from carnegie mellon and if he wanted to make copyrights and profits, then it would not spread like wildfire as we have it today.

So what is innovation?

Well, there are a few of us thinking that innovation works when we “share” …So then, how do we scale innovation in terms of generating profits? Some of our most innovative ideas that exist today are really free. Of course profit will come later, but you must give for free first to get consumers to play it. And once you have them “hook” or addictive to the product then you place a price tag or pay for secondary features/addons to improve the freebie .

I know cigarettes are bad for you and nasty towards your health, but think about it. How did cigarettes became so popular? The companies gave it to our WW2 soldiers for “free” and after the war the soldiers continued by purchasing their products.
